lock-in and lock-out

Generally I spend a truly disturbing amount on massively multiplayer game subscriptions.

At the moment I'm subscribed to Puzzle Pirates, City of Heroes, Final Fantasy XI, and World of Warcraft. I'm kind of bored of FFXI - it's an awesome complicated game, but it's just too much for me to work on and getting parties is way too hard. I suspect I'll dump WoW once I get bored of Battlegrounds, but that involves Battlegrounds coming out first. Puzzle Pirates and CoH are just fun, although I haven't been playing CoH lately.

In the past, I've also been subscribed to Anarchy Online and Planetside. Now AO was fun, and I will admit I miss it, in a sort of "yeah, I kind of miss having my legs devoured by rabid frogs" way. It was a fun game, when there wasn't anything better - it's probably improved since then, but I basically don't miss it, and if I wanted to go back to it there are many other things I could join.

Planetside, though, is different. Planetside was a massively multiplayer first-person shooter. It was damn fun. It had big vehicles and stuff to blow up and, holy crap, tactics! And I kinda got bored and unsubscribed eventually, but I've been really wanting to play it again.

Problem: I don't have my CDs anymore. I suspect they were stolen with the rest of my CD binder, but even if they weren't, I have NFI where they've gotten to. So that makes it a bit trickier. But I decided to go look at the website and see if they had any suggestions.

First off, I noticed they had a "log in and check your characters!" link, and out of amusement I decided to log in, and - holy crap! All my characters are still there! Dreadeye, Grannar - none of them have been deleted! I won't even have to start at square 1!

And then I go to the support area, and search for "download planetside" - and there's instructions for downloading the Sony station, and telling it "Start in Planetside" mode, so I do and it downloads the GUI I remember so well, and then I try to log on and it tells me "Sorry, you're not subscribed!"

Five minutes of typing in information later and it's downloading 4gb of game. Sony's making money off me again.

Final Fantasy XI, on the other hand . . . If you unsubscribe for a certain period of time (I believe it's 3 months) they not only delete your characters, but they actually lock you out entirely, and charge you $30 to restart your account. Take a wild guess on whether there's any chance I'll ever go back to FFXI.

("Time remaining: 03:24:19" dammit, I wanna play NOW)
