This journal currently covers more than 20% of my lifetime. (late-2009 edit: 30%)
Obviously I've changed a lot over time.
There's much in this journal that no longer applies. There are entries I wouldn't have made if I were writing it now. There are thoughts I wouldn't have thought, and things I wouldn't have said. There's quite a lot of truly uninteresting posts, but I guess if you make nearly three thousand posts, a lot of them are likely to be uninteresting.
There's some posts that I'm still proud of. Some that I think I wrote very, very well. One was put on the Livejournal Good Entries Archive, when it existed. (That's not what it was called. I forget what it was called.) Most, of course, are utterly terrible. But so it goes. Sturgeon's Law lives on.
Many people would go back and mark their entries friends-only, or even private. I'm not going to do that. This journal is staying open because . . . well, it's what I wrote. It's who I was. I'm not denying any of that, or pretending it didn't occur. It occured, and this journal is a record of that. It's not who I am now. But it is who I was, and I put a lot of time into it. So.
I know that occasionally people decide to read my livejournal from the beginning (they occasionally mention this to me). First off I think this is a terrible idea in every way. If you really want to read a lot of stuff I've read, I highly highly recommend starting at the present day and working backwards. Seriously. You'll encounter a lot more interesting stuff and a lot fewer Linkin Park lyrics. But if you do want to go from the beginning to the end, remember that, at least until you hit mid-2004 or so, I really hadn't figured out who I was, or what I wanted to do with myself. (I likely still haven't, to be honest, but at least I'm closer now.)
This is made painfully, painfully obvious by the first real post in my journal. Consider yourself warned.
But if you do read through my archives in depth, a few things I ask:
* If you encounter any dead links or broken images, post a comment on that entry saying so. I'll fix the link or at least add a note as to what it was. (If I can figure it out.)
* If you encounter any private or protected or friends-only entries, post a comment right before or right after that entry saying so. Many of them can likely be descreened, but considering that I posted maybe two dozen at most, there's no way I'm going through by hand to find them.
* If you encounter any entries that you consider really good, post a comment saying so. I wouldn't mind filling out my memories a bit, but, again, lazy. Plus I'm curious what still resonates with people.
* If you have any questions or comments, on any entry, feel free to comment. I don't consider my archives to be carved from immutable stone tablets. People can still reply, and I'll still see it thanks to email notification.
I don't expect anyone to say "oh hey let's go read Zorba's journal now". But people do occasionally, for some reason, and I may as well deal with this situation properly.
So, if you want to read it from day one? Start here, and click "next entry" until you get bored. But be warned, there be dragons here. And they wear absurd emo glasses, and write ludicrously bad goth poetry.
(Everyone's got to write a little goth poetry in their lifetime, I feel.)
Comments appreciated, as always.
